This profile does not aim to highlight Bai Maleiha’s royal lineage, but to trace her roots to determine what propels her to stand up for a cause. What motivates her to remain steadfast in her search for truth?

Bai Maleiha Bajunaid Candao hails from her paternal lineage, the blood of Sultan Muhammad Dipatuan Kudarat, known for his Muslim leadership, heroism and principles during his reign in southern part of Mindanao here in the Philippines.

Bai Maleiha is the great great grand daughter of Sultan Kudarat through his son, Sultan Pulalun. The ancestry of Bai Maleiha’s late mother, Bai Saada Bajunaid Candao, is from Yemen.

PROFILE AS A WRITER:

Bai Maleiha is a focused writer who espouses justice, peace and interfaith unity in the midst of the decaying moral and cultural fibers of many people owing to political vindictiveness, power struggle and hypocritical pro-poor concerns masking vested interest and self- promotion.

She used to edit and publish her own community paper from 1997 to 2001. At the height of the 2000 Mindanao war, she allied with her fellow journalists to call for peace.

Known to be feisty in her writings, she is also very straightforward in person. She says what is on her mind without fear or favor.

From 1990 to 1993, Bai Maleiha produced a television program titled “Sangkultura” (one culture), aired on CTV-12, the sister station of GMA-7 in Cotabato City. It was the first television program under the auspices of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) that rallied for unity and peace amidst cultural diversity. She received recognition for her government service as the Executive Director of the Office on Cultural Affairs of the ARMM in 1991.

Bai Maleiha B. Candao believes that services given to the masses need no recognition or applause for it is expected for every individual who has the means to help those in need and to take part in any social and cultural transformation.

However, she is thankful to those organizations who recognized her contribution to the government in whatever small way she had made an impact on the lives of those she tried hard to assist then.

Bai Maleiha does not expose herself unnecessarily not unless it is of extreme importance for her and her family. She is always comfortable with true people and loves to spend time with people who are humble and kindhearted.

She hates elitism. She said:
“A true blooded princess can work on her own without recognition,
and can be on her own unappreciated. It is the sincerity that counts in delivering fairness and unbiased services for all people regardless of faith and race” .

She does not fear powerful personalities but she obliges herself to respond positively to humble actions. She is just an ordinary lady with simple dreams but she knows where she stands and how to fight for her rights.
