A Repost From ANN (Asian News Network)

Promoting Filipino cuisine as a top brand

Manila (Philippine Daily Inquirer/ANN) - Many foreigners get tongue-tied when asked to describe Filipino cuisine. There's a hodgepodge of flavours that in the end translate to dishes without any real standards or possibly too much variety. Perhaps it is no wonder that the cuisine has yet to find an exalted position among its esteemed Asian neighbours such as Thai and Vietnamese cooking where flavors are more defined and distinct.

Nancy Reyes-Lumen, who calls herself the Adobo Queen, came up with "The Adobo Book" that confirms the multiple versions of adobo recipes available in the country. She suggests that the adobo is the dish that unites the country since the word is spoken in all dialects, although she also mentioned the impossibility of coming up with one universal recipe. In the book, she described her grandmother's (Aling Asiang of Aristocrat) adobo, as follows: "The pork cuts were bigger than usual, about three bites big and the pork cuts had a promise of meat and fat layering, nothing of that "healthy" kind where it's all lean meat... Little did I know then that the real secret of my Lola's (grandma) best-in-the-world-stickiest-tastiest-darkest-oiliest-most delicious adobo was deep down under."

On the other hand, the sinigang dish also deserves attention. During a 2010 conference held at Enderun Colleges, Professor Bel Castro pondered on the future of the sinigang, citing the growing use of instant mixes over the traditional practice of making broth from scratch. She mentioned that Filipinos are getting increasingly divorced from the environment and such relationship reflects itself in the food we eat. With growing urbanisation in many parts of the country, people have less time to cook from their gardens and rely instead on easy solutions. Aside from compromising the cuisine's flavours, the concept of food and lifestyle is also altered.

After taking the above into consideration, it may be worth ruminating whether the Philippines really has a national dish to offer the world. For example, Cebuanos may have a different take on the subject. More than a delicacy, the Cebu lechon symbolises prestige or stature that parties will not be considered grand without it. The roasted pig (usually with an apple on its mouth) occupies an esteemed position at the center table and is rarely served chopped. It is typically the host or his assistant that meticulously carves the lechon in front of the guests, sometimes in a checkered cutting method, as described by Ofel Bisnar whose father has operated a lechon business in Talisay, Cebu. She relates that aside from lemongrass and other herbs, her father also adds a whole chicken inside the lechon's cavity, thus making it more flavourful. Instead of a mechanised rotisserie, her father employs the manual version that also ensures that the pig is constantly brushed. Keep in mind that other provinces such as Pampanga, Bacolod and Davao also have their own favourite heritage recipes to showcase to the world.

Tourism efforts include the promotion of the country's cuisine and Filipino food forms an integral part of the national identity. Thus, there appears a need to develop more objective ways of defining the cuisine, perhaps some kind of standardization or classification that is typical in other countries. It may be worth looking into the possibility of synthesizing all the regional flavors into a collective brand or promoting each region uniquely - in a manner that visitors or international gourmets can taste, recognise and appreciate as well.

During a workshop held in Manila where she gave participants a taste of the most delicious duck adobo, Amy Besa who owns the Purple Yam Restaurant in New York, shared their efforts in asserting the uniqueness of the cuisine without having to apologise for it - like providing a spoon for guests, among others. While retaining its ethnicity, the restaurant has gained prominence and acceptability among Americans, an example that other Filipino marketers may wish to consider.

With the right market research and positioning, there is no stopping Filipino cuisine from becoming a truly global brand.

Horoscope Hang-Up: Earth Rotation Changes Zodiac Signs

If you're the type of person who relies on mysterious-sounding locations of stars to determine your personality and outcome in life, get ready to be shocked.

The field of astrology, which is concerned with horoscopes and the like, felt a major disruption from astronomers, who are concerned with actual stars and planets. The astronomers from the Minnesota Planetarium Society found that because of the moon's gravitational pull on Earth, the alignment of the stars was pushed by about a month. See the Best Portraits from TIME 2010.

"When [astrologers] say that the sun is in Pisces, it's really not in Pisces," noted Parke Kunkle, a member of the group's board. Your astrological sign is determined by the position of the sun on the day you were born, so that means everything you thought you knew about your horoscope is wrong.

It turns out that astrology has had issues from its inception. (Aside from the fact that it tries to link personality traits with positions of the stars.) Ancient Babylonians had 13 constellations, but wanted only 12, so threw out Ophuchicus, the snake holder. Libra didn't even enter the picture until the era of Julius Caesar.

According to the Minnesota Planetarium Society, here is where the real signs of the Zodiac should fall. Get ready for your world to change forever.

Capricorn: Jan. 20-Feb. 16.
Aquarius: Feb. 16-March 11.
Pisces: March 11-April 18.
Aries: April 18-May 13.
Taurus: May 13-June 21.
Gemini: June 21-July 20.
Cancer: July 20-Aug. 10.
Leo: Aug. 10-Sept. 16.
Virgo: Sept. 16-Oct. 30.
Libra: Oct. 30-Nov. 23.
Scorpio: Nov. 23-29.
Ophiuchus: Nov. 29-Dec. 17.
Sagittarius: Dec. 17-Jan. 20.

Willie suspends dance group for infighting

By Glenda Villena, For Yahoo! Southeast Asia Wednesday January 12, 2011 07:09 pm PST

Willie Revillame announced the suspension of the show's dance group WW Girls citing infighting between members that even reached social networking site Twitter.

"Mga matitigas ang ulo. Suspendido po sila hindi alam, indefinite kung babalik pa sila o hindi. Awayan ng awayan, awayan ng awayan. Pati sa twitter ho nag-aawayan. Yan ang disiplinang sinasabi ko. Biruin mo, programa niyo ‘to e magkakasama kayo dito. Sabi ko sa inyo, pumikit kayo, ibalik niyo yung dati niyong ginagawa nung nandun tayo sa kabilang istasyon, at anong buhay niyo ngayon. Ang lalaki ng sweldo niyo, almost 40 thousand, may kotse pang libre," Willie divulged in the Jan. 12 episode of Willing Willie.

According to Revillame, fighting within his show is strictly prohibited. "No one is indispensable," he said.

Anna Feliciano, the group's dance choreographer along with the show's staff and crew served as substitutes for the WW Girls while the dance group undergoes indefinite suspension. Despite the girls absence the show went on, lively as usual.

Sharon falls onstage in birthday concert

By Glenda Villena, For Yahoo! Southeast Asia Tuesday January 11, 2011 10:27 pm PST

Every year, fans of Megastar Sharon Cuneta flock to the Araneta Coliseum for her birthday celebration. This year, however, an unfortunate incident marred an otherwise glittering event on Tuesday, January 11, with the who's who in show business in attendance. Sharon met an accident onstage, falling down while singing a duet with Billy Crawford.

In her recent tweets, KC Concepcion confirmed that her mom was not feeling well after the accident and had to be rushed to the hospital.

"After the show mom felt some pain in her neck and back and also had dizzy spells. She was brought to the ER, all is clear, exhaustion lang," KC tweeted.

KC also said Sharon's supporters should have nothing to worry about because the Megastar is now safe at home and feeling much better.

"Mom is home, no more pain.Tnx for ur concern!," added KC.

Mega Concert and the all-star guests

Like her previous birthday concerts, Sharon's celebration this year lived up to expectations. Kapamilya artists graced the event with production numbers.

KC's presentation was the highlight of the concert when she performed a dance routine with Sam Milby, resembling a performance in Cirque du Soleil.

Piolo Pascual, who is being rumored to be dating KC, was present in the event as well as other Kapamilya stars like Jericho Rosales, Sarah Geronimo, Toni Gonzaga, Melai Cantiveros, Jason Francisco, Lani Misalucha and many more.

Sharon turned 45 last January 6. She first celebrated her birthday with her relatives and closest friends in her residence at Ayala Westgrove in Sta. Rosa Laguna.

(UPDATED) Solenn Heussaff feels offended by "bimbo" tag of French TV network

(UPDATED) Solenn Heussaff feels offended by "bimbo" tag of French TV network
Slideshow: Showbiz Photos

"I was very offended since my dad and I had helped them organize their documentary here [as well as provide for their] transportation. They wanted to film several sides of the Philippines and they just totally exaggerated the differences between the poor and more fortunate.

"They made my friends and I sound like total spoiled brats and uneducated and made us look like we don't work and all we do is live the lifestyle. All my friends are very well educated, respected, self-accomplished, down-to-earth and successful women.

"I'm very offended by their editing. Not to mention the title of the documentary was Gangsters, Drug Lords and Bimbos," saad ng actress-singer.

Sa panibagong text message na ipinadala niya sa PEP, sa pamamagitan pa rin ni Leo, ngayong gabi, sinabi ni Solenn na: "There were no specified names on the video. Is filming with some friends. No names were mentioned. But the title obviously is directed to us."

Samantala, pinabulaanan naman ni Anne sa pamamagitan ng kanyang Twitter account na kasama siya sa documentary.

News about Facebook shutting down on March 15 from a fake news site known for joke headlines, not a hoax

The news about Facebook shutting down on March 15 was not a hoax as some publications have reported. It came from the fake news website Weekly World News (WWN), which made the bogus announcement over the weekend. WWN, known for "(covering) events that seem to occur in a parallel universe," even posted fictitious quotes from Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg: "The stress of managing this company has ruined my life. I need to put an end to all the madness... I don't care about the money... I just want my old life back."

Mashable.com confirmed that the report was false. Facebook Director of Corporate Communications Larry Yu said, "Please help us put an end to this silliness... We didn't get the memo about shutting down and there's lots to do, so we'll just keep cranking away like always." Posted on Facebook's official fan page: "We aren't going anywhere; we're just getting started."

WWN, which started out in 1979 as a tabloid, clearly states on its website: "The reader should suspend disbelief for the sake of enjoyment." Its latest headlines include "Alien Spaceships to Attack Earth in 2011," "George Clooney to Run for President" and "Michelle Obama Pregnant!"

(UPDATE 2) Filipino Catholic devotees of the Black Nazarene join the feast day procession from Quirino Grandstand towards Quiapo Church in Manila on 09 January 2011. The Black Nazarene, a dark wooden sculpture of Jesus Christ, is believed to be miraculous by Filipinos and the annual feast of the Black Nazarene celebrated every January 09 is done with a traditional procession attended by thousands of barefoot devotees. In a report by the Associated Press, officials estimate that at least 300 people fainted or got sick during the prayer vigil prior to the procession.

“Several others were injured when barefoot devotees surged forward and trampled over iron railings to try to touch the 404-year-old image of Christ,” the report added.

The report quoted police as saying the crowd gathering at Rizal Park has reached a million as 3,500 policemen secure the event.
