It was surprising to see Joy Cancio, choreographer and talent manager of the all-girl group SexBomb Girls giving a 'sample' of her dance antics in ABS-CBN's "Showtime" last Tuesday, January 4.
"Showtime" airs on the same noontime slot as "Eat Bulaga," the show that launched Sex Bomb as a dance group. Due to their daily exposure on the longest running variety show, the group gained a huge following and emerged as one of the most famous female dance acts in the country. The group also released several hit songs, such as "Spaghetti," "Halukay Ube," and starred in their own TV series, "Daisy Siete."
They have been instrumental in the first automated national elections in May last year because of their instructional jingle, "Bilog na Hugis Itlog." Popular group members include Rochelle Pangilinan, Jopay Paguia, and Aira Bermudez, who was recently part of GMA-7's "Survivor Philippines Celebrity Edition."
Cancio's presence on the Kapamilya noontime show immediately sparked rumors that the group will transfer to ABS-CBN and become part of the upcoming local version of "The Price Is Right," which will be hosted by Kris Aquino.
Cancio dismissed the rumors but admitted she had sought to communicate with ABS-CBN to check if her talents can work for the Kapamilya network.
"Wala pong katotohanan yun kasi ngayon lang po talaga ako tumawag (sa ABS-CBN). Sabi ko na sana matulungan akong mabigyan ng trabaho yung bagong grupo ko. Wala pa po, actually ngayon pa lang po ako makikipag-usap," Cancio clarified in an interview with ABS-CBN's "Showbiz News Ngayon" (SNN) on Thursday, January 6.
Late last year, reports claim that Cancio's ties with "Eat Bulaga" had gone sour because the noontime show on GMA 7 allegedly cancelled an opening number which she and her group prepared for that day. "Daisy Siete," on the other hand, had been cancelled.
The SexBomb Girls had been dismissed from "Eat Bulaga" years back for boycotting the program due to an internal tussle with the show's producers. This led to the creation of a replacement dance group on the show, EB Babes, whose members were culled from a talent search. After its reconciliation with the show's producers, the SexBomb Girls were allowed back to the show, but only to alternate with the EB Babes on certain days.
Since then, the group's appearances on the program have been scarce.
