Pacquiao returns to hero’s welcome after latest victory
Pacquiao arrived at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 2 at 6:35 a.m. on a Philippine Airlines PR-103 flight from Los Angeles.
“Maraming, maraming salamat sa dasal at suporta. Masaya tayong Pilipino at nakapagdala tayo ng karangalan (at) proud tayong mga Pilipino (Thank you very much for your prayers and support. We Filipinos have reason to be happy and proud because our latest victory brought honor to the country)," he told a crowd gathered at the airport to welcome him.
He said his immediate plans include bringing his children to Los Angeles for a vacation, before the new school year starts.
The champ, wearing a light-brown polo, hugged his children, who presented their gifts to him and wife Jinkee.
“Masaya ako naghanda sila for me sa Mother’s Day. Masaya ako na-remember nila ako na-miss nila ako," Jinkee said.
Among others waiting for him at the airport were supporters led by former Manila Mayor Jose Atienza Jr., radio dzBB’s Glen Juego reported.
Fans at the NAIA-2 crowded the arrival area for a glimpse of their idol.
Many of those waiting for him brought placards with “Welcome home" messages.
After his arrival, Pacquiao was to have breakfast at the New World Hotel in Makati City before going to Quiapo Church in Manila for his customary thanksgiving Mass.
He is then to make a courtesy call on President Benigno Aquino III in MalacaƱang.
The champ is then scheduled to proceed to General Santos City where a hero’s welcome has been readied for him.
Last May 8, Pacquiao maintained his winning streak as he defended his welterweight crown against Sugar Shane Mosley, prevailing by unanimous decision.
He wore yellow gloves for his fight, to symbolize Filipinos’ unity especially in the fight against poverty. — LBG/HS, GMA News
